Julian, my big boy with his beautiful language and wonderful narrative skills, is finding the art of reading challenging. Last night he got upset about it; he wanted to be able to read books like me. Together, we've read some wonderful things: "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was one we both enjoyed recently. I've tried to explain to him that he'll get there, and that it's all about practising, too. For instance, a few weeks ago, he couldn't swim. We began swimming lessons this term - he with the utmost enthusiasm - and within a few short lessons, he could swim. Last night I watched him, having been moved up to the next level, swim half the length of the pool with his face in the water. It made us both so proud! His happiness in the water has rubbed off on Zoe: after a bit of fuss, she has announced she wants swimming lessons too, and began her journey last night. She also put her head under the water - she's on her way!

I often find myself marvelling at Julian's beauty. Physically, he's a lovely child, with shining eyes and wide, ever-present (and often cheeky) smile. But it's his shining heart that I can always see at the surface. Yesterday he told me about a boy he knows who has some developmental problems; he has been trying to help him, and he's always aware of his struggles. Still, he also relates to this boy as an equal - no pity there. Then, even though he knows he's the best drawer in his class - he really is! - he told me that when his friend recently drew a picture, "I told him it was better than mine. I knew it wasn't, but I just wanted to make him feel good."

I love this child, with every breath of my body. He is doing so well at the moment, and it's marvellous to watch.
